Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to our FAQ page for artificial eyes (ocular prostheses) and corneal scleral shells. Here, you’ll find answers to common questions about the use, care, and maintenance of your prosthetic eye. Our goal is to provide you with clear, helpful information to ensure your comfort and confidence with your ocular prosthesis.
To clean your artificial eye, gently wash it with mild soap and water, ensuring that you rinse it thoroughly to remove all soap residues. When storing it, place it in a clean container filled with water or a contact lens solution. This helps to keep the prosthesis hydrated and in good condition.
Artificial eyes and shells are primarily made from PMMA (Poly Methyl Methacrylate) or acrylic plastic. This material is chosen for its durability, safety, and its ability to be crafted into a realistic-looking eye.
The movement of your artificial eye or corneal scleral shell largely depends on the movement capability of the underlying implant or the condition of the blind eye. The prosthetic sits flush on the implant or blind eye, and its movement is influenced by how well the implant moves and the extent of trauma to the socket. Most patients experience satisfactory movement, but this can vary. We recommend discussing this in more detail during an evaluation appointment.
We generally recommend wearing your artificial eye continuously. However, if you feel discomfort, such as the sensation of debris or an eyelash behind it, it’s safe to remove the eye, clean it with mild soap and water, rinse the eye thoroughly, and then reinsert it. Most patients find they can comfortably wear their prosthetic eye continuously without the need for frequent removal.
